Time for New Magic and a New Year

Granted the month of January is almost over, so why would I should I still be talking of a New Year. Well as we all at Hocus Pocus are still happy for the well turn out of our first swap meet. It is time to say lets look at the New Year of magic and shows that we hope all of you all get more work. The meet was a magical day. Planning was down to the wire, but factors could easily make it not work. Paul was concerned but as the magical guy I am (honestly over 30 years ) of conventions and trade shows it was going to be a good day! The spirit of friendship was here in California. Paul knew the right folks to ask to join us and all of us just played host (as one would at any party or event) and we have had lots of Thank You's from those who attended. So please check our site for our next Swap meet which if I twist Paul's arm will be within this year either June or Sept. The magical friendship was more then alive and well.

On that same note if your within the area on Monday Feb 5 (next Monday) we are going to have Bob Sheets lecture at Hocus Pocus. You all know Bob, comedy magician, Bar magician, Street magician and just all around funny guy. It will be a night to not forget. Hocus Pocus is now set to be the next lecture spot for the best of magic for the central Cal area. Don't fret to travel to visit as we have great places to stay and great places to eat and visit. We would love you to spend a day with us. Call me if you wish a chair for this lecture. $10 in advance , $15 at the door.....

Tony's Picks

Corradin's Levitation

From the magical creative and ever producing mind of Anton Corradin comes the most amazing levitation. This could possible be the type effect the those street magicians would do on TV and make it look like a spectator from the audience is helping. You and I know its his helper. Either way Anton has created a effect that will blow the lay person away. This effect is so self contained its not funny how will be folks looking for wires above. As you can see it can be done anywhere as by the photo to the right. Amazing price for an effect that can make you look like a Las Vegas magician anytime, anywhere .

Masuda's WOW

What can I say about the most talked about effect on the chat rooms , and have it in stock and more then enough to fill the pre orders and more to sell. By the way if you pre-ordered and waited and waited and waited Paul is personally packing the orders and sending a gift to say thank you for waiting for it to come in. Those who cancelled your order, time to order and get what we have left. This effect has what is important in a magical effect magic and visual beauty. Signed card and visual appearance and a change. Easy to do and resets. Lasting magic, memories and maybe bigger tips when done in a tip type place. Don't miss it.

Avalanche

Well here is a effect that take the Snowstorm effect to a new level. The moment we have all been waiting for is here! The Avalanche, a patent pending special effect apparatus that presents a snowstorm without confetti! A snowstorm from your bare hands, and with NO MESSY CLEANUP, anytime during the show, from any place on stage! This self-contained apparatus will have you producing real, Evaporative Snow™, which will rise 6-8 feet into the air FROM YOUR BARE HANDS! A spectacular, memorable experience for the entire audience. You face the audience, show your hands empty, and then produce a beautiful snowstorm which rises 6-8 feet into the air. This can be done virtually surrounded, at any time during your act, at any place on stage, and/or as a finale. The Avalanche is one of the most revolutionary pieces of equipment in magic, today.

The apparatus comes to you ready to use and with a few moments of reading the brief instructions, you will be ready to perform miracles. No more external apparatus, loud motors, or oriental fans. With the incredible Avalanche, you will have a self-contained special effect apparatus that will emit "snow" just like the big machines. Both units are made of stainless steel, aluminum and machined metal as well as electronic components It shoot anything else in the air? The Blizzard will shoot confetti, glitter, playing cards, anything light weight. The Avalanche is designed to emit ONLY the Evaporative Snow™. What are these units? Both are a device that emits compressed air into the palm of your hand, creating a Evaporative Snow™ or Confetti snowstorm, card fountain, and more. How long does the air last? The air projects about 15-20 seconds each time. How loud is it? There is a small sssshhhhhing sound as the air is released, but no loud motors or fans. The sound can be covered with a soft musical track. Does it use batteries? Yes.

Both use two small lithium photo batteries. Where does the compressed air come from? It works with individual cartridges and uses two cartridges per show, or act. Cartridges come with your Avalanche and your BLIZZARD EFX-2000 Starter Kit and additional ones can be purchased from us, your magic dealer, Wal Mart, or sporting goods stores. The Blizzard Starter Kit comes with enough snowstorms and cartridges for about 5 performances. Don’t forget the bonus routines. The Avalanche comes with all of the items above, (except the confetti, which is not needed), and all you need to get started. Do you have to wear a jacket or long sleeves? No. Both devices are worn on the forearm and is hidden under a 3/4 sleeve. It is not noticeable at all if you are wearing a dress shirt. Either unit does use 2 cartridges for each performance. You are supplied 10 cartridges with every order. This would be enough for 5 performances. The price on the CO2 cartridges is $15.00 per dozen. Additional cartridges can be purchased from Wal Mart, sporting goods stores, or from us. To view a Windows Media clip of Avalanche check out our website. This is a totally kicker version of what you maybe doing or have everwanted to be doing!!!

Change Cap

Well can I say to someone smart enought to kick it up a notch to the old change bag. Some folks thought once we removed the handle its now hip and its a bag with no handle. Well now someone thought lets kick it up once more and make it it a hat. Hell from rappers to ever kid on the block wearing a hat backwards this could be the ultimate change bag. A baseball style hat that lets you
do all the change bag tricks you ever wanted. Timely , Hip and natural which is what magic is suppose to appear like when you perform it. Our job as magical personas is to make the everyday look magical. Using everyday objects to create magic!

Kate and Edith

What can I say about an effect that to this day I wish I had the poem stuck in my head. This is a effect that combines naughty and nice. An effect that is magical and poetic with a twist of the naughty. Here is an effect written and performed for many years by Kerry Pollack that some day I will get into my mind. Imagine telling a story of a King and two ladies and his concept of having the best of both worlds. This is done with the use of playing cards. It has become an underground classic when presented by Doc on his famous Bar Magic DVD which I highly recommend. Well without letting your mind wander it is a good yet fun story told only for the right type of crowd. Now after years of perfection Doc, Kerry and R. J Owens perform it live on this DVD so that you get the real feeling of a live performance to learn from. I look forward to see how the pro's make this naughty magical story work. When you have the right crowd this is a magical moment .

Tony's Tip

Sometimes if you have been a loyal reader to this Blog, it may sometimes be inspiring, sometimes a rant. The only thing each week I set forth to do is to inspire and open your mind. Let me take you back a moment. Was I ever going to be a magician? I was rasied in a working class life. My dad delivered bread, my mom a housewife. So how did magic enter my life? TV was my escape from working at McDonalds or selling Insurance. Mark Wilson, then Doug Henning showed me the light. Everytime you perform you are the magic that could make the next generation of magicians. If you saw last weeks photos from the last blog you saw Brady being taught by Bobby Reynolds, Tom Jogenson, and I saw also Patrick Snowden taking a moment to teach him. This warms my heart the same way my friend Jeff Mc Bride has master classes to teach the next generation. We who perform have been touched by someone. It is our job to share this knowledge and wisdom. This is why magic is the 2nd oldest profession. We won't go into what is the first.

I have been very lucky to be the keeper of so many secerts and learn more every day. If you buy tricks or collect old magic magazines to learn this is the way to keep our art alive. It was a honor to spend time last week with Mark and Nani. So in this way I stand high for the people that came before me. Max Maven is one person I admire who always says where the inspiration comes for his new tricks. Never ever saying its his trick but how he was inspired to move foreward from the minds that came before him. I personally always think since we all live in a closed world, we should honor the Billy Mc Combs, Jay Marshalls, U.F. Grants, Lewis Gansons, Slydinis, Frank Garcias, and so many mores that inspire that magic we do. Todays magicians will be doom to relieve the magic of the past if they don't remember the Gods that came before us. It is easy to learn and do but we are part of something special that regular folks don't ever know of the folks I just mention. It is had to say in the middle of you show like a singer would that this is a song made famous by the Bee Gee's I hope you enjoy my version of it. We can't! But don't ever forget you stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before you. Give credit where credit is due!! OK off my soapbox (email me if you don't get that term).

Here is wishing all the magic in you life every single day.....talk to me. Let me spotlight your career and share the magic for the next generation.

The Magic of the Hocus Pocus Swap Meet

The Stage was built. The tables and chairs set up. Weeks of planning, emails sent out to magicians as far South of California as well as far North. It was now Saturday Jan 20 at Hocus-Pocus time for the first annual swap meet but lets jump back one day for a moment.
Friday was arrival day for some of our vendors and lecturers. During this day Dick Barry, Suds, Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell made the trip up from the LA area. Shoot Ogawa traveled in from Las Vegas. Each of these folks got in early to set up of their tables. That night Paul hosted a great dinner for all our guests.

Dinner the night before the Swap Meet at the Joy Luck
A meal and time to catch up with friends before the next day's event.

Mark Wilson, Nani Darnell, yours truly and way to much food!

Ok lets jump back to 7:00 AM Saturday, as it was now time for the other folks that purchased tables to sell magic. Wolfgang made the travel from Las Vegas via LA. All the vendors had a 2 hour window to set up, we opened 9:00 AM sharp! Starting at 8:15 folks were already lining up in front of the building on a very cold morning in Fresno. So the doors opened and the swap meet begins. To understand that at least 70 people had already pre-paid for the lecture package, we knew we were going to have a full house. By count at the end of the day we figured at least 200 people showed up. So much magic to buy. So many magicians sharing ideas and making new friends. Each vendor had great new and used magic to sell.

Getting free coffee and food ready on a cold Fresno morning

The fun had only started. We planned out a day of lectures also for all these visitors to the magical building that is Hocus Pocus. The lectures ran the course of the day on time and to the minute. Suds was the first lecture and then came Robert Baxt, Dick Barry, Shoot Ogawa and for the grand finale Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell. Here are but a few pictures that are worth a thousand words of the fun, magic and friendship from the day.

Suds with the first lecture of a day of 5 lectures

Todd Brown of Mrs. Brown's Cookie fame visits the Hocus Pocus table

Mike Giusti and local magician/Houdini expert Frank Collins

Hocus Pocus Magic student Brady Lee getting words of wisdom from Bobby Reynolds

Performer/ writer/ Artist Tom Jorgenson, Mike, myself, Brady.

Notice Brady already knows how magicians need to pose for a proper picture. Lesson learned well young man!

So the day just kept getting better and better. Around 11:30 lunch was being cooked up in the parking lot for all the hungry magi's. To watch all of these famous folks gather eating, telling stories and performing for each other. This was and is what the brotherhood of magic is about. You could not have asked for a better day. Everything worked like clockwork. During the day I checked and rechecked that everyone was OK and things were going well. Again this job was made easy by our great staff. The Hocus Pocus staff pulled the best magic trick in the world making each person happy and amazed by this event. Personal thanks to everyone on the Hocus Pocus Team. The amount (sounding like a Las Vegas person for the moment) of love in the room was wonderful. To see the working magicians taking time to teach the young ones. To see the vendors making great deals for those who traveled far to find a good deal on magic. To know that each persons life has been enriched by this event will be something I am proud to have been a part of.

We are now looking at 3:30 in the afternoon and swap meet part ends. The vendors cleared the tables. We now move out of the lecture room into the main showroom. Taking about 125 chairs and setting them up in no time (thank you Ken, Louie and Jason) for Shoot Ogawa's lecture. Shoot started on time at 4:00 and just blew the room away with his brand of magic. His lecture is not to missed if he ever coomes to your town. Now the way we had the lectures lined up we were going to have a dinner break and then come back for Mark and Nani. Well the energy was just to good in the room to stop and come back. As soon as Shoot was finished (hour and a half lecture) Mark and Nani went on earlier.

Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell

This was the highlight of the entire day. First off Mark and Nani had been there all day. Taking time to pose with everyone and signing autographs. They had posters and 8x10's to sell as well as DVD's of all of the shows that they did on TV over the years. We were all treated to see videos of the Wilson's magic of TV. Mark also taught everyone some magic. First a cool trick with wine corks (which by the way have the Mark Wilson logo on them) Then a great rope effect was also taught. Then we all got to play "Mark Wilson Bingo". This is a great act for any promotion that you may do and we do sell it. All of this was like a boyhood dream for me to spend time with them. You see Mark was the reason (as well as Paul) why we got into magic. It was truly a honor to assist them during his lecture. This is my memory for life of this event. Thank you Mark and Nani for being the real magic with no trick photography (inside joke).

Mark and Tony

So by 9:00PM it was now time to lock the doors. Everyone has left the building. A day no one will forget! Paul and I are talking about doing this again soon, maybe as soon as this June. Words of praise keep coming in on how smooth this ran. It is thanks to all who attended that made this the best event one could ask to come to. If we do this again in June, do yourself a favor do not miss your chance to come. You will understand why we all have become magicians. The time spent chatting and meeting folks will only recharge your magic batteries. You will grow more and become a better person for having spent time with you hero's of magic.

So whats next at Hocus Pocus?

Since I built a great stage now for the showroom, get ready for the:

Hocus Pocus Lecture Series

Now is the time to sign up for a visit from the wacky man of magic and winner of lecturer of the year from the Magic Castle. This event will be on Feb. 5th at 7:00 PM and only cost $10.00 in advance $15.00 at the door. Bob will show you the best way you can make magic more entertaining thru comedy. He will give you his insight from his many years of working comedy clubs, bars, restaurants. His style of magic always leaves an audiences laughing and you will too on Feb. 5th. Call me at 1-800-407-4040 to get your seat reserved.

Once again my Thanks to everyone who were part of our first Swap Meet. Please tune into Paul's Blog on Friday. Mike has taken much more pictures and Paul will share much more stories of the event. Thank you, everyone.

Magically,

Tony Blanco

It was said to me We (americans don't hold the blueprint to creative ideas) So read each item attach to the name of Bruno Copin and you make the choice!!!!!

Tony's Tips

Well I do hope you get to visit us at our swap meet. If you have never been to one its a special treat in magic. A regular magic convention you get to chat with the vendors and see demo's of the products. At a swap meet it could be like shopping at a flea market and January White sale. Something you see on a table and your not sure if you want it. Well it will be to late when you get back to that table because you know it will be gone. During a swap meet, great one of a kind items get sold really quickly. I recommend also bringing cash for fast deals when you find them. Like in those movies about the American tourist in some arab market place, a little haggling with someone selling is actually welcomed, if you have cash.

At our event bring your camera's and notebooks for you don't want to miss your chance of taking a photo with some of our famous guest. Notebooks and tape recorders also so you don't miss a word from our lectures. Its been said many times "if you walk away with one idea its worth any expense. For our price of 5 Lectures now, for only 30.00 your should walk away with a book full of ideas.

You will get to meet fellow magicians, make new friends, make connections that will last you a lifetime. I have been lucky to meet my magic hero's at a magic convention and then share and get feed back from them over the years on the phone before internet and make life long friends. So for your magical career don't miss this event that Paul and I have work hard to bring magical folks together. This is something Paul as well as me work for in our career, to inspire your act. I personally look forward to sharing a moment with Mark and Nani as I grew up watching them. I have chatted with Nani on the phone for the products we sell from them and getting them to come to visit us for this event. So I hope that you get to make a magic moment. It will be a moment you don't want to miss. You will not want to miss those moments when we all can share war stories of gigs and sit down and know that we are not allow in what we do to make a living at what we enjoy as our choosen career.

I hope to see you all soon for our swap meet

Best magical Wishes,

Tony Blanco

Happy New Year

It's finally here! A New Year for those things you said you were going to do last year. A Chance to create, discover a new you! Each year folks make promises to become a better person, get in shape or get more focus on they career. Don't try so hard just think about it and you know what things will happen. This past year I have been able to do more then I could have believed years ago. So this year you can get a fresh start to. Plan a trip to get new ideas. Where? How about Fresno, California say this Jan. 20th. Well you know I have to remind you all to attend Hocus Pocus' first swap meet. Heck this past Sunday (yes on a Sunday) I built our new stage for this event. I used 10 2x6's and 2 4x8 3/4 birch plywood. This will be the stage where one of my magic hero's Mark Wilson will lecture. Also on this same stage during the swap meet will be Robert Baxt, Dick Barry and Suds. These are going to be some great lecturers sharing years of wisdom and knowledge. The Lecture package only cost $30. To rent a table to sell your stuff is only $15.00. To attend the swap meet (priceless) is free. So don't miss your chance to start the new year on a great note. If you want to attend or sell please call me to reserve your table or lecture.

Tony's Pick's

King King Rope Rings

Now heres a new and novel idea for a old effect. Having rings of ropes link has been around for a long time but now the spectators can examine the ropes! Showing two rope rings your cause them to link, unlink and all can be checked out then link another set of two, then three, then all four. Very Visual and get this easy. No magnets or snaps that's the other kicker! These ropes are brightly colored red which means all can see this effect and the method is very clever. Here is a routine that you can say follows magic's number one rule of "Packs Small and Plays Big"

Designing Miracles Book

Since we are talking about a fresh start for the new year here is a book for your new ideas. Darwin Ortiz has continued his way of thinking he first published in Strong Magic and has really tipped his personal secrerts. Darwin is famous for creating so many amazing card effects. How does he do it? In Designing Miracles he lets you in on his thought patterns in creating killer effects. Darwin spends the best part of the book also showing you a new way of thinking when putting your routines together. This book will show you a new way of thinking and understanding when you audiences are amazed or if the effect just lays a egg. Darwin lets you in on the insight of the audiences reactions and how to get the reaction you wish. Simply...this book will change the way you think about magic.

From Old to New DVD

From France comes Dominique Duvivier and his DVD set From Old to New. Dominique has been consider one of todays modern thinkers of magic. In France's he owns the oldest magic shop there and a new club called the The Double Fond. If that didn't keep busy he is always inventing new effects that not only amaze audiences but (key word) entertain them! This DVD set includes some of his best kept secret effects. I have had the pleasure a couple times to see him work. His look and his manner always seem to fool not only audiences but magicians too. So on this DVD set are just that, amazing effects that you will learn and entertain to create great close up magic moments for your audiences.

Brazen

From magic's best kept secret weapon Tom Jorgenson comes Brazen. Tom is truly the jack of all trades that every magician should live up to be like. An artist (art work for Magic Magazine), An Inventor, A builder and Performer. Tom's book The Medicine Show Book is a classic in showing the ways of building and traveling a show. Now Tom has come up with a brilliant take on the Blindfold routine. You the magi having saved the spoon bowls from a bending routine are now going to use them as part of your blind fold act. Spectator comes up and places these bowls on your eyes and then tapes them in place with strips of black tape. Yet by some miracle you can still see and know whats in front of you. You can even do this with clear tape and your eyes are seen coverd with the spoon bowls at all times. This truly will become your favorite way of doing a blindfold routine and never use another method.

Money Bag

Anton Corradin is a name that just says creative ideas and amazing props. From anvils that come out of no where to well crafted boxes to truly visual magic that's Anton! The Money Bag is his latest visual magic miracle (video on the website to see). In brief a black bag can be shown empty (it like a tube) reaching in an twisting it. You even prove the bag has no bottom after you have dropped a half dollar and it falls thru. Do this a couple of times and then it changes to a jumbo (and I mean jumbo) half dollar. Well if this works on a coin lets try a dollar bill. You place the bill in and now lots of dollars appear out of the bag. It's a great piece of visual money magic that you will want to put into your show.

Tony Tips

As we started off tonight talking about new ideas and new creations lets look back to the past for fresh ideas. They say that every so many years a new star of magic comes along to change the look of our craft. I go back in my career having watched Mark Wilson as the first nationally know magician on TV. Mark showed the world some of the latest creations that soon ever magician had to have. I know I wanted a Zig-Zag illusion and a Girl Thru glass. Mark set a standard for magic on TV. Then came Doug Henning who added rainbows and a sense of wonder, then David Copperfield who added charm, dance and romance to magic. Not only that a style of dress that some magicians still dress like.

So what am I saying here, each of these magicians each with their on style still drew water from the well. Having spent many years learning the tricks and the history of magic to reinvent it. As we all must do. but never forget the past of magic. Having the latest hottest effect is one thing but do you actually know how it even came to be. I find that if you spend say an extra bit of time really researching you tricks you can be surprised on how much more you may get out of an effect. Jeff McBride calls this "Play Time" when you but down the instructions and see how that magic box or tube can also be used. I was at his studio once and we chatted about the Ball and cone routine just playing and studying the cone. He told me of several ideas that could lead into the routine (the Dai Vernon act) but the magic was now about the theme of the effect before you even do the magic. That's Playtime!

So now our new genaration of magi's have really returned to the well, actually the street. This new group of Criss Angel's and David Blaine are really paying tribute to ancient performers. From India, to old England, Eygpt, todays magicians are creating that magical feeling in a special way on the street and in your face. Now I have my respects and complaints about some of this style of magic, but it is keeping magic alive. Gone are Tuxs and Doves and canes. So that's ok but lots of these effects done today are from the tails and top hat era only now done with snakes and creepy bugs. So where are you in this history of magic? How are you going to change or be the next look of magic? What will make someone want to hire your program? Are you hip or cool? Are you classy? Are you magical? Ask yourself these questions so that you can move toward bigger and better shows.

Now that we are begining a new year lets dust off all those books and DVD's and videos to see what gems we have overlooked these past years. I know I am always creating themes and ideas for each trick. That's not to say I just don't also do the effect as per instructions but you would never know I am, once my personality has been buffed over the effect. So this year I promise to have a few more guest bloggers from the world of show biz...but really I would like to start featuring some of you who read this each week. I can draw "water from the well" as much as the next guy but I would love to feature some new "wells" with fresher tasting ideas also for our family of Hocus Pocus readers.

Here is hoping to see you all soon at the swap meet and hoping some of you will be willing to let me feature you on this blog spot. A very best Happy New Year wish to all of you

Tony Blanco
